Recent studies that demonstrate the therapeutic value of medicinal cannabis for a wide range of health problems has resulted in support for cannabis skyrocketing. Cannabis could be useful in treating or alleviating the symptoms of numerous serious diseases, including spinal cord diseases, cancer and insomnia.
According to the Canadian Cancer Society, cancer causes approximately 30% of all deaths in the country. While cancer can’t be cured by cannabis, it can be used to reduce the severity of symptoms drastically, thereby improving patients’ quality of life. Studies show that two of cannabis key active components, CBD and THC can both stimulate appetite. This helps overcome some of the cachexia, anorexia and weight loss experienced by many cancer patients. Cannabis is also very effective in preventing the nausea often caused by cancer treatments such as chemotherapy.
Spinal Cord Disease
All spinal cord issues that are experienced and are not due to trauma, are known as spinal cord diseases. These include spinal stenosis, syringomyelia, spina bifida and multiple sclerosis. Patients suffering from spinal cord diseases often find therapeutic relief when using medicine based on cannabis. This is due to the ability of cannabis to ease pain and spasticity, the two most common symptoms of spinal cord diseases.
Studies show that medicines based on cannabis that is CBD or THC dominant offer effective treatment for a wide range of sleep disorders, insomnia being one of these. It is believed that cannabis reduces sleep latency, induces drowsiness and improves quality of sleep.
Any inflammation of the joints is known as arthritis and there are more than 100 different types. Types of arthritis commonly found include psoriatic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Typical symptoms include severe pain, weakness and stiffness, reduced range of motion, and redness and swelling around the joint. Of these symptoms, cannabis is most effective at treating pain. Research done on the effectiveness of cannabis in relieving pain caused by rheumatoid arthritis demonstrated that the disease’s activity was suppressed significantly and that cannabis was effective at relieving the pain.
Multiple sclerosis affects both the spinal cord and the brain. Although symptoms differ in both severity and type, these include spasms, pain, issues with balance, vision problems and tingling. The Multiple Sclerosis Journal published research that indicated that medicinal extracts based on cannabis significantly reduces the pain and spasticity caused by multiple sclerosis, while very few adverse effects were noted.
