MMJHerb team analyzed the most frequent cases of using medical marijuana among our customers and pointed out chronic pain as №1 case.
Each of us faced some type of pain: harsh and severe, dull and nagging, and what’s worse – debilitating chronic pain. And that’s why there is no need to explain what state it is, what inconvenience it causes, how unbearable and unworthy life itself becomes when you suffer from pain.
Whereas acute pain is characterised by sudden and usually limited duration and considered as a normal sensation, chronic pain lasts longer, according to the National Institute of Health chronic pain is a state lasts for more than 12 weeks, and requires sometimes long-lasting medical treatment, and unfortunately it could be often resistant to medications. As a rule chronic pain is a result of a serious illness, such as cancer, diabetes, fibromyalgia, arthritis or once suffered traumas and injuries.
Of course for now on there are different ways of treatment pain and particularly the chronic one. The methods of treatment vary from causes that bring about pain. Some of them are quite effective, however with their own after effects and outcomes. And again there is no 100% guarantee that some of them could really help.
The WebMD website provides the following top ways of pain treatment:
For a better and sooner effect people combine different approaches, listen to numerous physicians and healers and often finding themselves in complete despair they finally come to use of medical marijuana.
And in many states practitioners could not but prescribe Schedule I controlled medical cannabis to treat chronic pain, as it is recognised as a qualifying medical condition. By the way to the expanding list of states that include MMJ to treat any type of pain New York was added in March 2017. And what’s more worth mentioning is the fact that in these states the rate of addiction and opioid overdose was reduced.
Pain is a sensation that comes from our brain to signal that our organism is in danger. And if these sensations last for a long time logically the brain should be relaxed and informed of stopping sending these messages. That’s the principle of many medications and pain treatment methods.
Either anti-inflammatory drugs, or opioids block brain receptors responsible for pain signals. But absolutely the same way medical cannabis works with the only difference that cannabinoids are natural substances and unlike synthetically produced drugs do not lead to ulcer, stomach bleeding, kidney and liver damage.
Canadian researchers published a study in 2016, where a group of 215 patients with chronic non-cancer pain was using 12.5% THC products for one year. There was another group of 216 pain sufferers who were treated with traditional methods.
The cannabis group reported about a significant decrease of pain along with accompanied it anxiety, fatigue and depression. They stated also about the life quality rise and their daily life was not prevented with cannabis use, vice versa they felt better, both physically and mentally. A couple of side-effects were observed however such as sleeplessness and coughing, although conventional medications like Oxycodone or Vicodin have on their list of side-effects even death.
The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) published a report where studies show the possible way of relieving pain in the connection between natural cannabinoid receptors that we already have in our body and consuming medical marijuana. Cannabidinol (CBD) is the most promising of the hundreds of chemical compounds found in marijuana, because it possesses the most valuable for medicine qualities particularly in alleviating any type of pain.
One more Harvard-led review of 28 studies of cannabinoids was published in 2015 proves how efficacious medical cannabis can be in treating chronic pain, neuropathic pain, and spasticity due to multiple sclerosis.
Of course more research is needed because researchers are concerned with the scale of efficiency medical marijuana. Moreover, different strains may influence in different ways: some may give you the so-called “high” feeling because of higher THC content and some may influence directly the disturbing you symptoms because of higher CBD content.
But with a growing medical marijuana movement not only across the USA, but the whole world we extremely hope that possibilities for research and wider use of MMJ for seeking people could be extended and finally people in need could find relief and gain a proper life without pain.
