Cannabidiol Is What Makes Cannabis An Anxiety-Busting Superfood

There is a lot more to cannabis than what you learned in drug education classes in the 80s. Your elementary school guidance counselor probably taught you that the “active ingredient” in marijuana is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Of course, attributing all of the various effects of cannabis to THC is a gross oversimplification. It does not do justice to the complexity of cannabis as a medicinal and culinary plant.

THC is one of more than a hundred cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. So far, at least 113 cannabinoids have been identified. One of the most underrated components of cannabis, however, is cannabidiol (CBD). It, perhaps more than any of the other cannabinoids, deserves the status of a superfood.

What Is Cannabidiol?

Cannabidiol CBD is a cannabinoid, a type of chemical that interacts with proteins in the brain called cannabinoid receptors. About 40 percent of cannabis extract by volume is cannabidiol, meaning that it is very abundant in the cannabis plant. It is found in many parts of the cannabis plant, including the seeds, stems, and flowers. Unlike THC, CBD does not produce a high. Therefore, patients who want the medicinal effects of CBD without having to worry about appearing high at work can order cannabidiol oil without THC.

Therapeutic Uses of Cannabidiol

CBD is effective at reducing anxiety, which is why it is useful in the management of many psychiatric disorders. A study published in Schizophrenia Research even showed that CBD cannabidiol can reduce disordered thinking in patients with schizophrenia. Of course, you do not have to have been diagnosed with schizophrenia to benefit from the therapeutic, anxiety-reducing effects of CBD. Plenty of people manage their everyday anxiety by eating treats made with CBD oil. Current research is investigating potential applications of CBD in addiction medicine, as well.

Management of psychiatric symptoms is not the only therapeutic application of CBD. In Canada, a drug made with CBD is available by prescription for treatment of pain associated with multiple sclerosis. Many patients find CBD the most effective and least incapacitating treatment for epilepsy, although more peer-reviewed studies on this subject are required. It is also being studied for its anti-inflammatory properties.

Smoking Weed Is Usually Not the Best Way to Get THC

Most of the marijuana sold outside of medical cannabis dispensaries have low CBD. Growers selectively bred it to have more THC and less CBD; its purpose was to get people high, not to maximize CBD’s therapeutic effects. To get the maximum beneficial effects of CBD, you will need CBD oil or other products from a medical cannabis dispensary.
