These are characterized by pain and discomfort in the head region. These may be caused by physiological processes, medications or trauma to the head and neck. There are several different types of headaches:
- Migraine: these headaches are characterized by increased sensitivity to light, and sound as well as by high levels of pulsing pain. Migraines may be accompanied by a prodrome where the patient will see streaks of light, or auras, and are often followed by a feeling of fatigue. Other migraine symptoms may include nausea and vomiting.
- Tension Headaches: characterized by a mild, band-like pain around the head. These may be due to stress or untreated tension in the shoulders and neck.
- Sinus Headache: pain that is concurrent with the location of a sinus. Most common sinus headaches are in the browbone, where the frontal sinus is located, or in the cheekbone, which is the location of the maxillary sinus. These headaches may be concurrent with sinus irritation and a feeling of heaviness in the head.
- Cluster Headache: pain on one side of the face, typically in the periocular area. Cluster headaches are also associated with unilateral tearing and rhinorrhea.
Medical cannabis has been shown to be effective in relieving headache symptoms including migraine-associated nausea.
